Big-way Camp Outline

International Perspective
—
Travel: Often necessary to travel to foreign DZ to participate on big-ways
—
Procedures: Necessary to understand what is expected for big-ways before showing up at new DZ
—
Nomenclature: Specific words to describe equipment, skydiving techniques, etc.
—
Game plan: Specific techniques used when making big-way skydives Grip choices, grip order, keys before taking grips
—
Safety: Should be #1 priority. More people means more potential for accidents.
—
Mental Perspective
—
Big picture: Big-way is normal skydiving, but more attention must be paid to details
—
Must be more aware in aircraft, on exit, in freefall, during break-off, and approach to DZ
—
Teamwork: The more skydivers in the air, the more teamwork is required
—
Safety: More skydivers means more chances for interaction with others throughout dive
—
Performance: An incorrect performance can negatively affect many others
—
Stimulation: Sensory overload is possible when many new elements are introduced
—
Solution: Introduce new elements step-by-step; Focus on elements affecting one’s own area
—
Equipment
機材について
—
Aircraft: Often larger aircraft and tailgate aircraft used for big-ways
—
Jumpsuits: Specific characteristics of jumpsuits help or hurt performance
—
Light person needs low-drag jumpsuit; Heavy person needs more drag and swoop-cords
—
    Weights: Weight vests
—
Oxygen delivery: High altitudes are common on big-way jumps: must know how to use oxygen
—
Cannula is best 窶・with detachable hose; Waving hose is unacceptable
—
Anti-fog for helmet visors (if there is big difference between ground and exit temperatures)
—
Skydiving Strategies
戦略
—
Fall rate is greatest challenge to any big-way team: Everyone needs good range of fall rate
—
Most experience should be in base; less experienced outside (unless there are fall rate issues)
—
Start with smaller groups, making smaller versions of the larger target formations
Get familiar with fall rate, grips, keys,
—
Approaching formation: On radial, in slight “stadium” configuration
—
Keys: Used to complete a section (base), or to transition to next formation, or for break-off
—
Anticipate key: Be in position and prepared to take grip 窶・or move to next position
—
Docking on formation: Stopping in slot, on level, taking breath, then taking grip, looking to center
—
Flying in formation: Be light on grip (able to drop grip and not move 窶・up, down, in, out)
—
Problem solving: Be aware of any spinning: try to stop; Try to neutralize wave.
—
Break-off
—
Takes place in stages: Separation and deployment
—
Tracking Teams: Part of skydive, not part of actual “break-off”
—
Allows for a safe break-off and deployment of all team members
—
Vertical separation: More important on the very big formations
—
Canopy Flying
—
First thing to do after opening: check position of others near us
—
Move into designated “flight pattern” to approach DZ
—
Keep head on swivel as we approach DZ (canopies are converging into same area)
—
After landing: collapse canopy, look back to approaching canopies, and move from landing area
